Bulk Trash Now Collected Only From the Front of Residential Properties

(Washington, DC)  As the spring-cleaning season approaches, the Department of Public Works (DPW) is announcing a change in its popular bulk trash removal service. Beginning this week, residents requesting bulk trash collection are being directed to place the items in front of their property only. In the past, bulk trash could be set out at the same point of collection used for the resident's regular trash–-alley or curb side. The change is, in part, a response to complaints that the large trucks used to pick up bulk items are too big or too ungainly to fit through narrow alleys and can sometimes damage residents' property.

This change applies to bulk trash only and does not affect regular household trash or recyclables collection.

Bulk trash is collected by appointment from households that already receive DPW trash and recycling service. To make an appointment for a bulk trash pick-up, residents can simply call the Citywide Call Center at (202) 727-1000. After taking your information, the Call Center Service Representative will give you a collection date and a confirmation number.

Up to seven items may be collected at a time. Customers with more than seven items will be given subsequent appointment dates. Bulk items such as appliances, furniture, mattresses and tires, should be set out in front of your residence at the curb line no earlier than the day before your service date.

DPW does not remove bulk trash from commercial establishments, including multi-unit apartment buildings (more than three units). Additionally, be aware that renovation materials, plate glass, drywall and other construction debris cannot be collected.
