Press Release for Immediate Release October 27, 2006 Free Drop-Off for Household Hazardous Waste, Old Electronics October 28 (Washington, DC) The District Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold its fall household hazardous waste and electronics recycling drop-off Saturday, October 28 from 8 am to 3 pm at the District’s newly renovated Trash Transfer Station at 3200 Benning Road, NE. This service is free and open to all District residents. Residents may bring old cleaning and gardening chemicals; pesticides and poisons; acids, varnish and oil-based paints; solvents; aerosols; wood preservatives; spent batteries of all kinds; roofing tar; chemistry sets; automotive fluids, and even asbestos floor tiles to the collection site for environmentally safe disposal or recycling.  DPW will also have an electronics recycling station to receive end-of-life televisions, office and audio equipment, telephones, computers, computer monitors, parts, and accessories. All computer monitors and TV screens must be intact, not cracked, punctured or shattered. During processing, the electronics are broken down into their component parts. Precious as well as toxic metals are extracted, and then the various materials are recycled or disposed of safely.  A professional hazardous waste contractor will remove items from the residents’ vehicles. A licensed hauler will then take the waste to an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved facility for processing.  Items that will not be accepted during the household hazardous waste and e-cycling collection include munitions, audio speakers, explosives, bulk trash, wooden TV consoles, propane tanks, microwave ovens and other appliances, as well as radioactive or biologically active wastes.  For more information on collections of electronics recycling or household hazardous waste call the Citywide Call Center at (202) 727-1000.
