District Performs Christmas Tree-Cycling This Year

(Washington, DC) Christmas trees and other holiday greenery will be collected curbside from January 2 through January 13, 2007. This year, the District will be tree-cycling—using holiday trees for city beautification projects. First this involves reducing the trees by putting them through a chipper. After a drying period, the rough wood chips will be mixed with leaf compost and used for city beautification projects.

Residents who receive DC trash collection service are encouraged to put holiday trees and other greenery in curbside tree boxes by January 2, 2007. Trees will be picked up during a special two-week collection from January 2 to 13. Since these trees will be tree-cycled, it is important that they be free of any kind of ornamentation. Additionally, they must be set out loose, not in bags.

Residents who wish to keep their trees longer should put them out at the normal point of trash collection (curbside or alley) after January 13. The Department of Public Works (DPW) will then collect the trees along with the regular trash, as truck space permits over the following weeks. Trees mixed with trash cannot be tree-cycled.
