Booting

When parking tickets remain unpaid, the District of Columbia takes further remedial action. The widely recognized "Denver Boot" is applied to the wheels of vehicles that have accumulated two or more 60-day-old, unpaid parking tickets. Placement of the boot immobilizes the car.

A booted vehicle is subject to towing immediately unless the outstanding parking tickets and boot fee are paid.

The District has booting crews that patrol high-density parking areas daily. Using mobile digital terminals, these crews can "run the plates" of any parked vehicle for outstanding tickets even if the vehicle is parked legally at the time. Additional trucks are engaged primarily in removing boots after fines have been satisfied.

A booted vehicle cannot be released to the owner until all outstanding parking citations, boot fee ($75) and/or any other fines have been paid. Boots are typically removed approximately one hour after fines have been paid. Fines are paid at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Adjudication Office at 301 C Street, NW.  Payments can be made Monday through Friday from 8:15 am to 5:00 pm.

DPW Introduces The Sweeper

The District of Columbia is preparing to implement a system to support street cleaning process. The License Plate Recognition program is used to mail warning notices of parking violations on street sweeping routes to the registered owner of the vehicles.  No fines or payment will be required during the initial pilot period.  This test period will prepare the Citizens of the District of Columbia for the implementation of this new photo enforcement system and the generation of parking tickets resulting from improperly parked vehicles on street sweeping routes.
