Parking on Weekends and Holidays
Parking enforcement is relaxed on federal holidays and weekends for many violations affecting business and residential traffic flow.
However, parking laws affecting public safety are always in effect—even on weekends—and violators are subject to ticketing by the Metropolitan Police Department or other law enforcement agencies empowered to write citations on behalf of the District government. Parking violations affecting public safety include blocking emergency entrances or exits, blocking fire hydrants, parking too close to an intersection (No Parking Anytime), obstructing crosswalks, etc.
* Note: All vehicles must display valid license plates, registration and inspection stickers to park on District streets. Residents should also be aware that they must register their vehicles in the District within 30 days of residency.
Holidays
The District government observes 11 legal holidays. On these holidays, the District government offices are closed and most municipal services are suspended for the day. There is no parking enforcement, including meters, loading zones, or residential permit zones, and no street sweeping or Rush Hour lane restrictions. There are no booting or abandoned vehicle operations. Typically, all services, parking rules and enforcement activities resume the following business day, unless official decree states otherwise.
Holiday Schedule
* By law, when a public holiday falls on Saturday, the holiday is observed by the government on the Friday before. When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed on the Monday following.
Weekends
On weekends, there are no Rush Hour parking restrictions anywhere in the city. While most zoned residential and metered parking restrictions are not in effect on weekends, some busy commercial areas, such as Georgetown, have Saturday parking enforcement. Please check signs and meters to be sure you are legally parked.
