Solid Waste Management Administration

The Department of Public Works (DPW) provides the essential, daily sanitation services that DC residents expect from their government. DPW's core sanitation services include street and alley cleaning, graffiti removal and the collection of solid waste, primarily residential trash, yard waste and recycling.  DPW also picks up bulk trash by appointment, and schedules the bi-annual Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events in the spring and fall. Seasonally, DPW is responsible for collection, snow plowing, and mowing most of the District's median strips.

Largely behind the scenes, the department's SWEEP inspectors enforce numerous sanitation, illegal dumping and anti-litter laws.

Our goal every day is to make the District of Columbia a clean and beautiful city.
