Bulk Trash Collection

Sometimes residents need to dispose of items that are just too large for the regular trash trucks to accommodate. The Department of Public Works (DPW) collects large, bulky items by appointment from households that receive DPW trash collection service—these households include single-family homes and buildings with three (or fewer) apartments. DPW does not collect bulk trash from commercial establishments, including multi-unit apartment buildings (more than three units).

Bulk items, such as sofas, refrigerators, hot water heaters, mattresses and box springs, are picked up at the same place you set out your regular trash. This is either in the alley behind the home or in the front of the property.

To arrange for a bulk collection appointment, call the Mayor’s Citywide Call Center at 311. Up to seven items may be collected at one time. Customers with more than seven items will be given subsequent appointments. Be sure to tell the Citywide Call Center representative where you normally have trash collection as well as if there are special circumstances involved in collecting the bulk trash (e.g. steep grade, multiple steps, or lack of space).
