Supercans

District residents who receive once-a-week DPW trash collection services were provided with a new Supercan, free of charge, in the Spring of 2001. These 96-gallon containers are constructed with wheels and handles for easy mobility and have attached, tight-fitting lids to deter rodents.

With its uniform "inventory" of new Supercans, DPW is better able to monitor repairs and replacement of these containers.

Subsequent to the delivery of one new Supercan to each once-a-week collection location, DC residents may purchase additional Supercans from DPW. Send a check or money order, made payable to "The DC Treasurer" in the amount of $62.50, to the address below:

DPW SWMA
2750 South Capitol Street, SE
Washington, DC 20032

Warranty repairs (replacement of wheels, replacement of tops) will be done free of charge. Supercans with manufacturing defects will be replaced at no charge. Damage caused by abuse of the Supercan is the responsibility of the resident. Stolen Supercans will be replaced for a $20 delivery and handling fee. A police report will be required.

The saying "A Clean City … It's Everyone's Job," is more than a theme, more than a slogan, more than a thought; it is a way of life. Proper trash storage will help control the rodent population and improve the overall appearance of residential streets and alleys in the District of Columbia.

Helpful Tips

  • Set trash out no earlier than 6:30 pm, the evening before and return the container to your property
by 8:00 pm on your collection day.
  • Residents are required to have a Supercan in order to have trash picked up.
  • Always put trash in plastic bags before placing in Supercan. (Tie bags closed.)
  • Periodically wash out can to eliminate odors that can attract rats.
  • Do not overload Supercans. Lids must be kept closed. When full, the Supercan must weigh no more than 250 pounds.
