Sanitation Enforcement

DPW's Solid Waste Education and Enforcement Program (SWEEP) educates the public about the benefits of proper sanitation practices. When education fails, the department must use its enforcement staff to help keep the city clean.

Report illegal dumping, overflowing dumpsters and unmaintained public spaces abutting private property by calling the Mayor's Citywide Call Center at 311. DPW investigates and determines the type of enforcement action to take, such as a warning, a fine, or a seizure, in the case of a vehicle used in illegal dumping.

Helpful Tips

  • Use City-Issued Trash Containers with Tight-Fitting Lids

  • Disinfect trash containers to help keep pests away.
  • Use cedar mulch to help repel animals.
  • Never sweep leaves or trash into storm/sewer drains.
  • Keep your property clean and Litter-Free.
