DPW to Observe Emancipation Day, Thurs., April 16

Sanitation services will be suspended. Parking regulations will be enforced in the Nationals Park neighborhood and along the streetcar line. DPW will NOT enforce rush hour and other parking rules.

(Washington, DC) The DC Department of Public Works will observe Emancipation Day, Thursday, April 16; therefore, sanitation services and parking enforcement will be suspended until Friday, April 17.

Sanitation services will be suspended for the holiday and will resume Friday, April 17.

  • In once-a-week trash and recycling collection neighborhoods, Thursday’s collections will “slide” to Friday, and Friday’s collections will be made Saturday.
  • In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday’s and Tuesday’s collections will follow the regular schedule while Thursday’s collections will “slide” to Friday and Friday’s collections will be made Saturday.
  • Street sweeping will be suspended Thursday and resume Friday, April 17.

The Fort Totten Transfer Station* will be closed Thursday, April 16 and reopen Friday, April 17 to residents between 1 pm and 5 pm.

The next Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling drop-off after the holiday will be Saturday, April 18, 8 am to 3 pm. The next shredding drop-off is Saturday, May 2. Additionally, DPW will conduct a monthly weekday HHW/e-cycling drop-off the Thursday before the first Saturday of each month (except holidays).  The next Thursday HHW/e-cycling drop-off is Thursday, April 30, 1 pm to 5 pm.

DPW will not enforce parking restrictions Thursday, April 16, except along the streetcar line and in the Nationals Park area.  “Blocked” Streetcar Parking Enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, e.g., New Year’s Day, along H Street and Benning Road, NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue, NE. On Sundays and holidays enforcement is between 8 am and 10 pm. Enforcement on Mondays-Thursdays is 6 am to 11 am; and on Fridays and Saturdays, enforcement runs between 6 am and 1 am. Additionally, the Nationals have a home game; therefore, parking regulations will be enforced in the Nationals Park neighborhood. Normal enforcement resumes April 17.
