DPW TO OBSERVE INAUGURATION DAY, JAN. 20; NO TRASH & RECYCLING COLLECTION ON FRIDAY

Thursday, January 19, 2017
Sanitation and parking services will be affected both days.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today how services will be affected on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 16, and Inauguration Day, Friday, January 20.

Trash/recycling collections: Trash and recycling collections originally scheduled for Thursday will now be made on Saturday, January 21 and Friday collections will now be made on Sunday, January 22.

Ft. Totten*: The transfer station will be closed Friday, January 20. It reopens Saturday, January 21 for residents to bring trash, recyclables, bulk, household hazardous waste and e-cyclables between 8 am and 3 pm.

Parking enforcement: Enforcement of expired meters, residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions will be suspended Friday, January 20. Enforcement of all parking restrictions resumes Saturday, January 21. DPW will ticket and tow for all safety violations, e.g., obstruction of bus stops, driveways, hydrants, crosswalks, and emergency no parking zones. Throughout the District, vehicles will be towed that violate “Emergency No Parking” and Inauguration-related “Reserved Parking” signs. All areas designated as Inauguration events will be posted with either or both Emergency No Parking and Reserved Parking signs, and vehicles parked in violation of these signs will be ticketed and towed immediately. “Blocked” streetcar parking enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, along H Street and Benning Road, NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue, NE. The hours of enforcement are concurrent with the streetcar schedule, which can be found at https://www.dcstreetcar.com/riding/schedule/.

Ft. Totten: The Ft. Totten Transfer Station, located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, will be closed Friday, January 20. Residents may resume bringing bulk trash and recyclables on Tuesday, January 17, between 1 pm and 5 pm. On Saturday, January 21 between 8 am and 3 pm, in addition to bringing trash and recyclables, residents also may bring household hazardous waste and e-cyclables.

The next Saturday household hazardous waste/e-cycling/document shredding drop-off day is February 4, 8 am to 3 pm, (these services are available the first Saturday of the month, except holidays). DPW is accepting only household hazardous waste and e-cyclables the Thursday before the first Saturday of the month (February 2, from 1 pm to 5 pm). DPW will not accept personal documents for shredding on Thursdays as there is no way to secure these items until the contractor arrives on Saturday, February 4.
