DPW to Observe Presidents Day, Mon., Feb. 20

Wednesday, February 15, 2017
Sanitation services will be suspended for the day as well as enforcement of most parking restrictions, including meters. DPW will enforce parking restrictions along the streetcar line.

The DC Department of Public Works will observe Presidents Day, Monday, February 20; therefore, sanitation services and most parking enforcement will be suspended until Tuesday, February 21.

Sanitation services will be suspended for the holiday and will resume Tuesday, February 21.

• Trash and recycling collections in once-a-week collection neighborhoods will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week. Monday’s collections slide to Tuesday, Tuesday’s slides to Wednesday and so on.

• In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday’s and Thursday’s collections will slide to Tuesday and Friday. Tuesday’s and Friday’s collections will slide to Wednesday and Saturday.

• DPW is continuing to collect holiday trees and greenery, which should be placed where the resident’s trash is collected and all ornaments, lights and tinsel should be removed.

The Ft. Totten Transfer Station* will be closed Monday, February 20 and reopen Tuesday, February 21 to residents between 1 pm and 5 pm.

Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling drop-off is weekly on Saturdays, 8 am to 3 pm. Personal document shredding usually is the first Saturday of the month (except holidays); however due to overwhelming demand February 4 that resulted in some residents having to be turned away, an additional shredding event will be Saturday, February 18, 8 am to 3 pm. DPW will accept no more than the equivalent of 5 boxes – 16.5”x12.5”x8.5”, the approximate size of a box of copy paper – of documents, such as bank statements, credit cards, and pay stubs for shredding from each resident. The next regularly-scheduled shredding drop-off is Saturday, March 4.

Additionally, DPW will conduct a monthly weekday HHW/e-cycling drop-off the Thursday before the first Saturday of each month (except holidays). The next Thursday HHW/e-cycling drop-off is Thursday, March 2, 1 pm to 5 pm. HHW/ E-cycling drop off and document shredding occur at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station.

On Presidents Day, Monday, February 20, DPW will enforce streetcar parking restrictions along the H Street/Benning Road, NE corridor.

“Blocked” Streetcar Parking Enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, along H Street and Benning Road, NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue, NE. The hours of enforcement are concurrent with the streetcar schedule, which can be found at https://www.dcstreetcar.com/riding/schedule/. Normal parking enforcement operations will resume Tuesday, February 21. *Directions to Ft. Totten, 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE: Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street.

Directions from additional locations can be found at http://dpw.dc.gov/node/414922.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) provides essential city services in two distinct program areas: environmental services/solid waste management and parking enforcement. Both contribute to making our District streets and public spaces clean, safe, attractive and accessible for all residents, businesses, commuters and visitors.
