DPW Offers Options to Dispose of HHW/E-cycling/Personal Documents for Shredding in Ward 8

Thursday, September 15, 2016

(Washington, DC) – The Department of Public Works (DPW) is holding a special household hazardous/electronic waste (HHW/e-waste) drop off and personal document shredding service Saturday, September 17, 2016, 11:00am-4:00pm on the grounds of St. Elizabeth’s campus at 1100 Alabama Avenue, SE.

Once vehicles arrive at the guard’s station, they will be directed to the lot and then onto the appropriate recycling or shredding station. Vehicles with commercial license tags will not be allowed to access the event.

Residents may bring HHW items such as cooking oil, pesticides, pet flea control and cleaning fluids to the event, along with e-cycling items such as computers, televisions and other unwanted electronic equipment and up to five boxes of personal documents for shredding.  For a list of all HHW items accepted by DPW, please click on this link Acceptable/Prohibited Items to navigate to Acceptable/Prohibited Household Hazardous Waste Items. For e-cyclables, please click on this link What to E-Cycle to navigate to What to E-Cycle. DPW does not accept latex paint, which can be disposed of in the trash. First, dry it out by adding an absorbent, such as kitty litter or sawdust, before putting it in the trash.

DPW offers HHW/e-waste drop off services for all District residents every Saturday from 8:00am-3:00pm at the Fort Totten transfer station at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE (directions can be found at Fort Totten Transfer Station). It offers personal document shredding on the first Saturday of each month only.
