DPW Services to Be Affected Thanksgiving Day, Thurs., Nov. 24 and Fri., Nov. 25

Monday, November 21, 2016
Trash, recycling will not be collected; most parking enforcement will be suspended. Leaves will be collected as scheduled from “Area C” neighborhoods.

The Department of Public Works announced today how services will be affected in observance of Thanksgiving Day, November 24, and on Friday, November 25.

SANITATION SERVICES

Trash and Recycling Collections: Thursday’s trash and recycling collections will “slide” to the next day, Friday, November 25. Friday’s collections will be made Saturday, November 26. This applies to both once-a-week and twice-a-week collection neighborhoods. Trash and recycling containers should be put out for collection no earlier than 6:30 pm the night before collection and removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day to avoid sanitation enforcement.

Ft. Totten: The Ft. Totten Transfer Station, located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, will be closed Thanksgiving Day and on Friday, November 25. It will reopen to DC residents on Saturday, November 26, 8 am to 3 pm for Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling drop-off (personal document shredding is the first Saturday of the month only, except holidays). Directions to Ft. Totten can be found at http://dpw.dc.gov/node/414922.

Leaf Collections: Leaf collections will be made from “Area C” neighborhoods every day between Monday, November 21, and Saturday, November 26 (including Thanksgiving Day Thursday and on Friday, November 25). DPW is following the collection schedule published in the leaf collection brochure mailed to households that receive DPW trash/recycling collections. Area C residents should rake their leaves into their treebox to ensure their leaves are ready when the crews come to collect them November 21 through November 26. Residents can use DPW’s Web site (www.dpw.dc.gov) to view the 2016-2017 leaf collection schedule by selecting Leaf Collection Services. To check the status of leaf collection, click on “Check Leaf Collection Status in Your Neighborhood” (http://leaf.dcgis.dc.gov/) and enter your address.

PARKING ENFORCEMENT SERVICES

Parking Enforcement of expired meters, residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions will be suspended on Thanksgiving Day and on Friday, November 25. However, Streetcar parking restrictions along the H Street/Benning Road, NE corridor will be enforced BOTH days.

“Blocked” Streetcar Parking Enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, along H Street and Benning Road, NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue, NE. The hours of enforcement are concurrent with the streetcar schedule, which can be found at https://www.dcstreetcar.com/riding/schedule/. Normal parking enforcement operations will resume on Saturday, November 26.
