(WASHINGTON, DC)  The Department of Public Works announced today how services will be affected in observance of Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27.

SANITATION SERVICES
Trash and Recycling Collections: Thursday’s trash and recycling collections will “slide” to the next day, Friday, November 27 and Friday’s collections will be made Saturday, November 28.  This applies to both once-a-week and twice-a-week collection neighborhoods.  Trash and recycling containers should be put out for collection no earlier than 6:30 pm the night before collection and removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day; otherwise, the property owner may be subject to sanitation enforcement.

Ft. Totten: The Ft. Totten Transfer Station, located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, will be closed Thanksgiving Day and Friday, November 27. It will reopen Saturday, November 28, 8 am to 3 pm to DC residents. Under the residential use requirements for Ft. Totten, vehicles with commercial license tags will not be allowed access. Additionally, tag-a-long trailers; stake-body trucks; trucks or rental vehicles longer than 14 feet; and vehicles with side boards, and/or ladders/ladder racks will not be allowed access.

Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling drop-off is weekly on Saturdays, 8 am to 3 pm.  Personal document shredding will remain the first Saturday of the month (except holidays) only.  The next shredding drop-off is Saturday, December 5. Additionally, DPW will conduct a monthly weekday HHW/E-cycling drop-off the Thursday before the first Saturday of each month (except holidays).  The next Thursday HHW/E-cycling drop-off is Thursday, December 3, 1 pm to 5 pm. For more details about HHW/e-cycling/personal document shredding go to http://dpw.dc.gov/service/household-hazardous-waste-e-cycling-document-shredding

Directions to Ft. Totten: Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street.  Directions from additional locations can be found at Fort Totten Transfer Station.

Leaf Collections: Leaf collections are being made from “Area D” neighborhoods between Monday, November 23 and Saturday, November 28 (including Thanksgiving Day and Friday, November 27).  DPW is following the collection schedule published in the leaf collection brochure mailed to households that receive DPW trash/recycling collections.  Area D residents should rake their leaves into their treebox by Sunday, November 22 to ensure their leaves are ready when the crews come to collect them November 23 through November 28.

Residents can use DPW’s Web site (www.dpw.dc.gov) to view the 2015-2016 leaf collection schedule by selecting Leaf Collection Services.  To check the status of leaf collection, click on “Check Leaf Collection Status in Your Neighborhood” (http://leaf.dcgis.dc.gov/) and enter your address.

PARKING ENFORCEMENT SERVICES

Parking Enforcement: Parking meters will not be enforced Thanksgiving Day or Friday, November 27.  Residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions also will not be enforced.  Safety violations will be enforced Friday, November 27, including double parking, unauthorized parking on private property, and blocking an intersection, alley, driveway, entrance, crosswalk, fire hydrant, or bus stop.

On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27, DPW will enforce streetcar parking restrictions along the H Street/Benning Road, NE corridor. “Blocked” Streetcar Parking Enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, e.g., Christmas Day, along H Street and Benning Road, NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue, NE. On Sundays and holidays enforcement is between 8 am and 11 pm. Enforcement on Mondays-Thursdays is 6 am to midnight; and on Fridays and Saturdays, enforcement runs between 6 am and 2 am.
