Trash/Recycling Container Repair and Purchase
Starting Monday, May 13, 2013, senior citizens, age 60 and older (with proof of age), will be able to pay $30 for a Supercan (used in once-a-week trash collection neighborhoods), or $20 for the 32-gallon trash cart (used in twice-a-week collection neighborhoods) and $20 for the blue recycling carts that are used citywide.
Non-seniors will continue to pay $62.50 for a Supercan or $45 for a 32-gallon trash cart or recycling cart.
DPW will continue to replace lids, bars and wheels for free on Supercans and the 32-gallon trash and recycling carts. Supercans that are older than 10 years may not be able to be repaired because the manufacturer no longer makes those lids, wheels or lift bars. Repair requests may be made by calling 311 or placed through the 311 web site, http:/311.dc.gov. Residents may pay for their containers by check or money order, made payable to the “DC Treasurer.” The address where the container is to be delivered should be written on the payment. Mail payment to: Department of Public Works, 2750 South Capitol Street, SE, Washington, DC 20032. If requesting the senior discount, please include proof of age, such as a copy of the senior’s driver’s license, passport or non-driver identification issued by the DC Department of Motor Vehicles. When landlords make the request for their tenants who are senior citizens, proof of age of the tenant should be provided.
Containers will be delivered within 10 business days after receiving payment. Once the container is delivered, residents should put their address (street name and number) on the side and top (a bright, garish paint will make the container stand out) and record the container’s serial number to help deter theft and assist in identifying the container if it does go missing.
For more information, call 311 or if outside the District 202.737.4404.
