CFL bulbs contain an extremely small amount of mercury; however over time, concentrations of mercury can accumulate in our landfills.
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) that is improperly disposed of can end up in our drinking water. That's why DPW encourages residents to take CFLs and household hazardous items to the Ft. Totten Transfer Station (4900 John F. McCormack Road, NE) on the first Saturday of the month to be disposed of safely and properly. Residents can also bring their CFLs to Home Depot, True Value Hardware, Ikea and Lowes. For more information on other locations that may accept HHW, visit www.earth911.org.
What Should I Do if a CFL Breaks in My Home?
- Do not inhale the vapor
- Do not use a vacuum for cleanup
- Sweep the pieces together with a brush or broom, not with your hand
- Clean up glass with a wet rag or towl and place the towel, along with the pieces, into a sealed plastic bag.
- Bring that sealed bag to us on Saturday at Ft. Totten Transfer Station for proper disposal.
