(Washington, DC) The Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today that residential parking restrictions will be enforced New Year’s Day, Thursday, January 1, 2015 in the Nationals Park neighborhood. The 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will be played at the stadium that day. DPW also reminded motorists that daily enforcement along the streetcar route will be in effect as well.

“Blocked” Streetcar Parking Enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, e.g., New Year’s Day, along H Street and Benning Road, NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue, NE. On Sundays and holidays enforcement is between 8 am and 10 pm. Enforcement on Mondays-Thursdays is 6 am to 11 am; and on Fridays and Saturdays, enforcement runs between 6 am and 1 am.

Parking enforcement by DPW elsewhere in the District will be suspended New Year’s Day. Normal enforcement services will resume Friday, January 2.

Other DPW services will be suspended New Year’s Day and will resume Friday, January 2, 2015.

Trash/recycling collections:  Thursday trash and recycling collections will “slide” to Friday, and Friday trash and recycling collections will “slide” to Saturday.  DC regulations allow cans to be in the public space between 6:30 pm the day before trash/recycling collection and 8 pm of the collection day.

Ft. Totten Transfer Station:  Ft. Totten, located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, will be closed Thursday and Friday, December 25 and 26, and Thursday, January 1.  Each Saturday, except holidays, Ft. Totten is open 8 am to 3 pm for residents to drop off household hazardous waste and e-cyclables and it will be open Saturday, December 27 to receive these items. Ft. Totten will be open Friday, January 2 for household and bulk trash drop-off services 1 pm to 5 pm. The next Saturday household hazardous waste/e-cycling/document shredding drop-off day is Saturday, January 3, 8 am to 3 pm, (document shredding is available only the first Saturday of the month, except holidays). The next weekday HHW/e-cycling drop-off will be Thursday, January 29, 1 pm to 5 pm.

DPW does not accept personal documents for shredding on Thursdays as there is no way to secure these items until the contractor is in place on the first Saturday.

Directions to Ft. Totten:  Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street.  Directions from additional locations can be found at http://dpw.dc.gov/node/414922.

Leaf Collections:  Between December 15 and 27, leaf collections will be made from most “Area B” neighborhoods, except December 25.  In Ward 5, Area B is scheduled for collections to be made between December 22 and January 3.

Live Holiday Tree Collections:  Place live holiday trees, wreaths and other greenery next to the trash container at the resident’s regular collection point.  Trees collected between December 28-January 10 will be recycled.  After January 10, trees will be collected with the trash as space allows in the trash trucks. Unwanted artificial trees and greenery should be put in the trash.

Residents can use DPW’s Website – www.dpw.dc.gov – to view the 2014-2015 leaf collection schedule by selecting Leaf Collection and clicking on “Check Leaf Collection Status in Your Neighborhood” (http://leaf.dcgis.dc.gov/) , enter your address then select "Search.” This leaf collection season, DPW is posting photographs showing the status of collections on some streets.
