(Washington, DC) - With forecasted warmer temperatures signaling the possible end of snow in the District, the Department of Public Works (DPW) announces the resumption of residential street sweeping from Monday, March 3 through Friday, October 31. During this time, motorists are asked to obey posted signs indicating the schedule of parking restrictions in order to ensure streets are swept thoroughly.
“As we welcome the return of spring, we’re also welcoming the resumption of one of DC’s most essential services,” said DPW Deputy Director Anthony Crispino. “Our residential street sweeping program diverts pollutants away from our sewers and keeps our neighborhood streets clean, which ultimately improves the District’s air and water quality.”
To facilitate effective mechanical street sweeping, parking restrictions will be enforced on streets with posted signage. Parking is generally prohibited for two-hour intervals (9:30 am to 11:30 am or 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm) during sweeping hours. Alternate side parking is required on streets where parking is allowed on only one side. To raise awareness, DPW will issue warnings to vehicles parked on signed streets from March 3 to March 14. Fines of $45 will be issued to violators after March 14.
“Our dedicated sweepers remove over 2,000 tons of debris annually, but we can only do that when residents do their part by moving their cars on scheduled sweeping days,” said Crispino. “When we work together, we can keep our streets cleaner and our communities healthier.”
DPW’s street sweeping program also provides routine, unscheduled street sweeping throughout District neighborhoods and on sections of arterial roadways. For more information about DC’s posted residential street cleaning program and other DPW spring services, visit dpw.dc.gov/spring.
