DC Looking to Replace Graffiti Tagged Walls with Free Murals in 2011

Friday, March 11, 2011
DC building owners are invited to respond to call to donate murals space.

(Washington, DC) MuralsDC, a collaboration between the DC Commission on the Arts and the Humanities (DCCAH), and the Department of Public Works (DPW) will soon launch the fourth year of MuralsDC. The program began in 2007 by Councilmember Jim Graham to combat the growing trend of illegal graffiti and reduce urban blight. DPW is looking for building owners, of chronically tagged walls, who would like to donate wall space for this free program, which has been extremely effective in ending the cycle of tagging.

  • Donated space must be privately owned (not a private residence) and located in the District of Columbia.
  • Owner must consent (via a signed Authorization and Release form) to donate wall space for at least one year and mural must remain intact for that year.
  • Donated space must be a chronic target of graffiti.
  • Donated space must be highly visible from the street.

Building owners can feel free to visit www.dpw.dc.gov and look under the "More DPW Features" section to select the "Official Call for Mural Site Locations” link. They will be able to print both the Call for Sites and the Authorization and Release form.
