(Washington, DC) The DC Department of Public Works announced today that it will begin accepting household hazardous waste and e-cyclables the first Thursday of the month, starting August 4, to accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prevent them from bringing these items to the regularly scheduled drop-off held the first Saturday of the month at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station.

This alternative schedule is for residents who cannot participate on the first Saturday because of their faith. Ft. Totten will be open between 1 and 7 pm the first Thursday of the month to receive items such as oil-based paint, batteries, computers, and other electronic and toxic items. DPW will accept materials Thursday, September 29, in advance of the October 1 regularly scheduled Saturday drop-off.

DPW is accommodating residents on the first Thursday of the month so they can follow their religious beliefs. There is very limited capacity to receive these items outside of the monthly Saturday drop-off event; therefore, residents are asked to bring their household hazardous waste and e-cyclables to the Saturday drop-off. While DPW normally offers shredding of personal documents the first Saturday, they cannot accept items for shredding on Thursdays because they cannot protect these documents until the shredding contractor arrives the first Saturday.

Ft. Totten Schedule

  • Weekdays (except holidays), 1 pm to 5 pm, to receive residents’ bulk items, recyclables and trash.
  • Saturdays (except holidays), 8 am to 3 pm, to receive bulk items, recyclables and trash.
  • First Thursday of the month (except holidays), starting August 4, 1 pm to 7 pm. to receive household hazardous waste and e-cyclables.
  • First Saturday of the month (except holidays), 8 am to 3 pm, to receive all the items identified in the schedule, as well as personal documents (no more than five boxes) to be shredded.
