DPW to Observe Christmas, New Year's Day Monday, December 26, Monday, January 2

Monday, December 19, 2011

(Washington, DC) The Department of Public Works announced today how services will be affected in observance of Christmas (December 26, 2011) and New Year’s Day (January 2, 2012).

Trash and Recycling Collections: For the weeks of December 25, 2011 and January 1, 2012, collections will begin Tuesday and will run through Saturday. In once-a-week collection neighborhoods, collections will “slide” to the next day. In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday and Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and Friday, and Tuesday and Friday collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday. Trash and recycling containers should be put out for collection no earlier than 6:30 pm the night before collection and removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day.

Parking Enforcement: DPW will not enforce parking meters, residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions Monday, December 26, and Monday, January 2. Normal enforcement will resume Tuesday, December 27, and Tuesday, January 3. Also, DPW will not tow abandoned vehicles when the holidays are observed. DPW will enforce parking regulations Saturday, December 24 and December 31.

Ft. Totten: The Ft. Totten Transfer Station, located at 4900 John F. McCormack Road, NE, will be closed Monday, December 26, and Monday, January 2. Bulk trash drop-off services will be available Tuesday, December 27, through Friday, December 30, 1 pm to 5 pm, and Saturday, December 31, 8 am to 3 pm. During the following week, drop-off services will be available Tuesday, January 3, through Friday, January 6, 1 pm to 5 pm, and Saturday, January 7, 8 am to 3 pm. The next Saturday household hazardous waste/e-cycling/document shredding drop-off day is Saturday, January 7, 8 am to 3 pm, (these services are available the first Saturday of the month, except holidays).

To accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prohibit them from using the Saturday drop-off, DPW is accepting only household hazardous waste and e-cyclables the first Thursday of the month (January 5, from 1 pm to 5 pm). DPW will not accept personal documents for shredding on Thursday as there is no way to secure these items until the contractor is in place on Saturday.

Directions to Ft. Totten: Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Road, NE and continue to the end of the street.

Leaf Collections: Between December 19 and 31, leaf collections will be made from most “Area B” neighborhoods, except December 26. Area B residents should rake their leaves into their treebox spaces by Sunday, December 18, to ensure their leaves are collected. In Ward 5, Area B is scheduled for collections to be made between Tuesday, December 27, and Saturday, January 7.

Holiday Tree Collections: Holiday trees and wreaths will be picked up curbside from January 3 to January 14. Remove all decorations and place the greenery in the treebox space in front of your home between Monday, January 2, and Monday, January 9. Please do not put the trees in plastic or cloth bags. Trees collected between January 3 and 14 will be recycled. Any trees not collected by January 14 should be set out with your trash to be picked up as space in the trash trucks allows over the following weeks.

Residents can check the leaf collection status in their neighborhood.
