Mayor Vincent C. Gray Tackles the First Significant Snowfall of the 2010-2011 Winter Season

(Washington, DC) – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Washington, DC area which will be in effect until 4 am, Thursday, January 27.  The District and surrounding areas can expect to receive between 5 to 10 inches of snow.  The heaviest snowfall is expected to continue until 11 pm. Today, Mayor Vincent C. Gray held his snow preparation press conference at the W Street salt dome to inform District residents of the city’s readiness and response planning efforts. “We recognize the inherent difficulties in predicting exactly what the weather will be, so, we are following the District’s Snow Plan and taking every precaution to ensure the safety of District residents.”

District snow crews have pre-treated roads and will continue to address the accumulation throughout the course of the evening.  District residents, business owners and building managers are strongly encouraged to give attention to the stairs and sidewalks in front of homes and businesses as any precipitation that falls is likely to stick.

Notes:

  • DC Government will observe a two-hour delay on Thursday, January 27. All essential personnel must report on time
  • DCPS has canceled after-school and evening programs for today.
  • DCPS will have a 2-hour delay on Thursday, January 27.
  • DC Public Libraries and the Department of Parks and Recreation closed today at 4:30 pm.
  • All DC DMV facilities will open at 10:15 am.  For more information on DMV emergency closing schedule, please visit http://www.dmv.dc.gov.

Protective Actions for Motorists:

  • Do not drive.  If you must drive do not drive distracted.  Use hands free tools while talking on your cellular phone.
  • Stay on main roads – avoid back roads and alleys
  • Be aware of hazardous road conditions.
  • Keep your gas tank full.
  • Clear all the snow and ice from your vehicle’s hood, roof, windows and lights before driving.
  • Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition.
  • Have an emergency “go-kit” in your car. Visit www.hsema.dc.gov to learn how to make your go-kit.

Residents should monitor local media outlets, as well as visit www.dc.gov, www.dcps.dc.gov, www.dpw.dc.gov for snow updates.
