Overnight Snow, Winter Weather Advisory and High Winds Mean Possible Slippery Road Conditions

Tuesday, December 14, 2010
yield sign with stormy weather ahead

(Washington, DC) The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory through 9 am Tuesday morning for the Washington, DC region. Periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain may continue to move through the region with minimal accumulation in the District already. Wind chill factors are currently between 5 and 9° F. District snow crews have treated main arteries, however, below freezing temperatures and high winds may make roadways slippery with bridges, overpasses, ramps and elevated areas prone to icy conditions.

The District Department of Transportation and Department of Public Works—the agencies responsible for snow removal and treatment of roadways in the District of Columbia—remind motorists to:

  • Do not drive distracted.
  • Clear all the snow and ice from your vehicle's windows and lights—even the hood and roof—before driving.
  • Drivers should drive with their headlights on, clear wiper blades and stay on main arteries
  • Remember that driving on ice is significantly different than driving on snow.
  • Use extreme caution and maintain safe speeds and distances from other vehicles..
  • Be aware of road conditions, particularly black ice which can be deceptive in its appearance giving the driver a false sense of security on the road.
  • Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition. Bridge decks will ice up sooner than the adjacent pavement.
  • Remember to keep a safe distance from emergency and snow vehicles. Give the drivers plenty of room to safely do their jobs.
  • Help your elderly or disabled neighbors remove snow from steps and sidewalks.
