Until now, residents learned about a collection delay after it happened, through a general notice, a social media post, or a call to 311. The Collection Status Map changes that. Residents can enter their address on the Collection Status Map and see their trash and recycling collection days alongside the current status of the collection route that serves that address. There is nothing to download, no account to create, and no waiting for someone to post an update.
Route status is driven by data from DPW collection vehicles and updates throughout the service day, and every result displays the time it was last updated, so residents can see exactly how current the information is. Trash and recycling appear separately because collection days and route status for the two services are not always the same. DPW built the feature for the moments the answer matters most — holiday weeks when collection days shift, weather events that affect service, and ordinary days when a route runs outside its normal service window. Rather than describing a disruption in general terms, DPW can now point residents to the status for their own address.
Please note: DPW does not collect from mixed-use residential/commercial buildings or residential buildings with four or more units. Apartment buildings with four or more units, mixed-use residential/commercial buildings, and commercial properties must contract for their own trash/recycling collection services. When a trash and recycling collection day falls on a holiday, collections will "slide" to the next day for the rest of the week after the holiday through Saturday. See the DPW Slide Guide for more information.

The Collection Status Map is a feature on the DPW website that shows your trash and recycling collection days and whether your collection route is running on schedule today. Enter your address to see your schedule and your current route status. No account or download is required
How do I find my collection status?
-
Go to the DPW website, open the Collection Status Map, and enter your service address. Your trash and recycling collection days and your current route status will appear. The map works in any phone or desktop browser.
How current is the information?

What should I do if my route is delayed?
-
Leave your bins out at your normal collection point, unless a message states otherwise for a specific event.
Do I need to download anything?
-
No. The Collection Status Map is a feature on the DPW website and works in any browser with no download and no account needed.
Does the map cover both trash and recycling?
-
Yes. Entering your address returns your collection days and current route status for both services, shown separately.
Can the map tell me what time my truck will arrive?
-
No. The map shows the status of your collection route, not the location of a specific vehicle or an estimated arrival time.
What if the map does not say my collection is carried over or delayed, and my trash/recycling was not collected?
-
Routes operating on schedule are expected to conclude by 7:00 pm. If your trash/recycling was not collected by 7:00 pm on your scheduled collection day, report the missed collection to 311 or at https://311.dc.gov/. Also note what the map showed. That helps DPW identify and correct status errors.
What if the map is not working?
-
Collection operates on the normal schedule unless otherwise noted. Check the DPW website for a posted notice. If status information is not updating, the map will say so rather than show information that may be out of date
