The Annual Waste Diversion Update reports on the waste diversion programs and initiatives underway across the District, along with data on how much waste we generate and how much we divert. Residents, businesses, the Mayor, and the Council use this report to track progress and coordinate work toward the District's waste diversion goals.
The report is reviewed by the District's Interagency Waste Reduction Working Group. The Working Group implements the Sustainable Solid Waste Management Amendment Act of 2014, which requires the District to build waste diversion policies and programs that divert 80% of solid waste from landfills and incineration through source reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, and anaerobic digestion. The Zero Waste DC Plan sets 2040 as the target year for meeting that goal.
Solid Waste Diversion Report 2019-2022
On behalf of Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Department of Public Works’ (DPW) Office of Waste Diversion is proud to present the Solid Waste Diversion Annual Report for calendar years 2019-2022. First established in the Sustainable DC Plan in 2013 and codified through the Sustainable Solid Waste Management Amendment Act of 2014 (“Act”), the District’s zero waste goal aims to divert 80% or more of the city’s solid waste stream away from landfills and incineration through waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting. This Solid Waste Diversion Annual Report provides data on these efforts for CY 2019-2022, as required by of the Act. In Section I, “Summary of Results,” this report provides data on solid waste tonnage generated and diverted between 2019 and 2022 and is intended to track the progress that the District is making in pursuit of its zero waste goals. In Section II, “Estimating Citywide Waste Diversion,” the report estimates unreported solid waste to contribute to an improved understanding of citywide solid waste generation and diversion.
Solid Waste Diversion Report 2018
The Department of Public Works, on behalf of the Mayor, is proud to present the Calendar Year 2018 Solid Waste Diversion Progress Report in fulfillment of the annual reporting requirements of the Sustainable Solid Waste Management Amendment Act of 2014. Zero Waste is defined as diverting 80% or more of the city’s solid waste stream away from landfills and waste-to-energy facilities. This annual report includes data and information that describes solid waste activity during 2018 and is intended to track progress that the city is making in pursuit of this Zero Waste vision. Notable changes have been made to this report’s solid waste diversion metrics, something made possible in part by recently estimated citywide data. Specific changes are discussed in the following sections, as well as a brief summary of the 2018 results.
Solid Waste Diversion Report 2017
The FY 2017 Annual Solid Waste Diversion Progress Report was prepared in fulfillment of the reporting requirements as specified in the Sustainable Solid Waste Management Amendment Act of 2014 (the Act). This report includes an overview of the programs and initiatives being spearheaded by an array of individuals and organizations and their efficacy in meeting the District’s waste diversion goals and objectives. It includes an overview of key accomplishments and waste generation and diversion rates for FY 2017. Waste Diversion includes all the activities that result in solid waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting, which are prioritized by highest environmental preference to least in the District’s Solid Waste Hierarchy included below. Zero Waste is defined as the diversion of 80 percent or more of the waste generated by the city and in alignment with the District’s established solid waste hierarchy (see below); acknowledging there will be some materials that are not recoverable and will be sent to landfills or waste-to-energy facilities.
Solid Waste Diversion Report: FY 16 Data Addendum
The District’s Fiscal Year 2015 & 2016 Solid Waste Diversion Progress Report featured solid waste data for fiscal year 2015, and an overview of the District’s recent waste diversion successes. The following addendum has been produced to provide the solid waste data for fiscal year 2016 in fulfillment of the Sustainable Solid Waste Management Amendment Act of 2014’s annual reporting requirements.
