DC Fleet Management / Environmental Responsibility

Fleet also helps the District reduce its fuel consumption and meet its environmental goals for improved air quality. It achieves this by acquiring healthier alternative fuel vehicles (AFV) that use bio-diesel, E-85, electricity, compressed natural gas (CNG) and ultra-low sulfur diesel. Altogether, there are more than 700 alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles in the District’s fleet.

In September 2011, the District introduced bio-diesel (B-20) fuel. More than 2,300 vehicles use this clean burning alternative fuel that comes from 20 percent renewable resources. The District is one of a few major cities to use this renewable resource.

In 2012, Mayor Vincent C. Gray and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Administrator Shawn Garvin announced that the District has acquired 10 alternative fuel vehicles to be used for trash collection, street sweeping, snow removal and other services provided by the District. The vehicles were purchased using federal stimulus funds provided by EPA through the District Department of the Environment (DDOE).

Since 2009, Fleet’s environmental expertise has been honored each year with the Government Green Fleet award.

The District was the first jurisdiction to introduce the innovative DC Fleet Share motor pool operation (based on the Zipcar model) that allows DC government employees to reserve a vehicle via the Internet on a first-come, first-served basis. The District’s online fleet management maximizes fleet utilization on an hourly basis, allowing a high number of trips to be supported by a smaller number of vehicles. The motor pool offers mid-size and compact vehicles, which are fuel efficient Honda hybrids.

In 2012, DPW added four Chevy Volts (plug-in electric vehicles) to the FleetShare motor pool program. DPW is the pioneer among government fleet managers in the use of the Zip Car vehicle reservations model, which has transformed the motor pool operation, increased vehicle productivity and reduced those annoying circumstances that plague shared-used vehicles.
