Dead Animals

DPW trash containers are intended for everyday household waste, not for the disposal of animals. In the interest of public health and safety, DPW collects animals such as wildlife or roadkill that have died on public property (i.e., sidewalks, streets and alleys).

DPW collects dead animals from public spaces only – the sidewalk, street, or alley. DPW does not go on private property to remove a dead animal. If you see a dead animal in a public space, please contact 311 to open a service request to have it removed. You may do this online at 311.dc.gov or by calling 311. If the phone you’re calling from is outside of the 202 area code, call (202) 737-4404. Please select menu option 5, for "city services," to reach an operator.

Per DC Health, if you’ve experienced the loss of a pet, there are several options for a proper and respectful removal. Individuals should first contact their veterinary practice for guidance, as all veterinary facilities in the District are required to have a rendering service available. Alternatively, individuals may choose to contact a private service that can retrieve the animal from their home.

To prepare your deceased pet for removal, the animal’s body should be placed in a properly sealed plastic bag to contain any bodily fluids and stored in a cool location to slow natural decomposition. You may also contact Brandywine Valley SPCA at 202-888-PETS to learn more about their available pet aftercare services. These are offered at a cost, and their team is here to support you during this time.

To learn more about animal services, please contact DC Health’s Animal Services Program by visiting https://dchealth.dc.gov/animal-services or calling 202-888-PETS.
