Residents on Streets that Receive Scheduled Cleaning Are Reminded to Move their Vehicles During Posted Hours to Avoid Citations

(Washington, DC) - The Department of Public Works (DPW) announces the resumption of residential street sweeping, which will operate from Monday, March 2 through Friday, October 30. During this time, motorists are asked to obey posted signs indicating the schedule of parking restrictions in order to ensure streets are swept thoroughly.

“After this snow-filled winter, DPW is looking forward to spring and the return of many of our spring operations—beginning with street cleaning,” said DPW Interim Director Anthony Crispino. “We’re reminding residents to move their vehicles on posted street-cleaning days so that our equipment can clean curb to curb. This will allow our crews to clear away debris left over from the fall and winter season and to help keep streets clean throughout the spring through fall cleaning season.”

To facilitate effective street sweeping, parking restrictions will be enforced on signed streets. Parking is generally prohibited for two-hour intervals (9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.) during sweeping hours. Alternate side parking is required on streets where parking is allowed on only one side. To increase awareness and give residents time to readjust to the posted schedule, DPW will issue warnings to vehicles parked on signed streets from March 2 to March 13. Beginning Monday, March 16, $45 fines will be issued to violators.

DPW’s signed street sweeping program removes more than 2,000 tons of debris annually, diverting pollutants away from sewers and safeguarding the integrity of our marine ecosystems. The program also provides routine, unscheduled street sweeping throughout District neighborhoods and on sections of arterial roadways.
