The Department of Public Works (DPW) hosts Special Waste Collection Events, which are your chance to safely recycle electronics, dispose of hazardous waste, and shred documents. Residents can reserve their 15-minute spot for quick, easy drop-off! Open to DC residents only—bring proof of residency. No commercial waste allowed. Let’s keep DC clean together!

Current Delays:

All delayed routes are being actively monitored to ensure completion. Routes operating on schedule are expected to conclude by 7:00 p.m. Residents should ensure all containers are placed at the designated point of collection to support timely service. As of April 15, 2026, these routes are delayed and are expected to be completed by April 16, 2026. Please have your containers at your point of collection.

Trash route in ANC 4C, which may include Petworth, 16th Street Heights, and Columbia Heights
Trash route in ANC 5B, which may include Brookland, Michigan Park, North Michigan Park, University Heights, and parts of Woodridge.
Trash route in ANC 5D, which may include Carver-Langston, Gallaudet (the university area), Ivy City, Trinidad, and Union Market.
Recycle route in ANC 5B, which may include Brookland, Michigan Park, North Michigan Park, University Heights, and parts of Woodridge.
Recycle route in ANC 5E, which may include Bates, Bloomingdale, Edgewood, Hanover, Stronghold, and Truxton Circle.

Fort Totten Transfer Station has Reopened

DPW operates solid waste disposal at two transfer stations; Fort Totten Transfer Station and Benning Road Transfer Station. Benning Road Transfer Station is temporarily closed until further notice. Household Hazardous Waste, electronics recycling, and document shredding will be collected during special waste collection events.
