Fleet Management: Keeping the District Moving
Nationally ranked fleet services powering the city services residents count on every day.
About Fleet Management
The Fleet Management Administration (FMA), part of the District's Department of Public Works (DPW), provides the reliable vehicles and equipment that keep District government operating every day.
Our team manages and maintains thousands of government vehicles and pieces of equipment used by District agencies to deliver essential public services. From sanitation trucks and street sweepers to passenger vehicles and specialized equipment, we make sure government employees have safe, dependable vehicles to serve the community.
Behind the scenes, our technicians, fleet professionals, and customer service teams perform vehicle maintenance, coordinate repairs, manage fuel operations, and expand the District's use of sustainable transportation technologies.
Our commitment to safety, innovation, and operational excellence has earned national recognition. In 2026, FMA ranked #18 in the 100 Best Fleets in the Americas, up from #40 the previous year [CONFIRM: Was the #40 ranking on the 2025 list?], and received the NAFA Green Fleet Award for Best Alternative Fuel Integration.
Whether responding to winter weather, supporting emergency operations, maintaining critical infrastructure, or helping agencies serve residents, FMA is proud to keep the District moving.

What This Means for You
Many of the city services you see on your street depend on a vehicle FMA keeps ready for the job.
Trash and recycling
We maintain and fuel the collection trucks that serve neighborhoods across all eight wards.
Snow and ice response
We prepare plows and salt trucks before winter arrives, and our technicians stand ready to keep them on the road during storms.
Cleaner streets
We keep the street sweepers and cleanup equipment running that help keep District streets and alleys clean.
Public safety support
We fuel District government vehicles, including fire trucks and school buses.
Cleaner air
We use biodiesel in our heavy-duty fleet and continue adding electric vehicles to reduce emissions across the District.
FMA's work has earned recognition from national and regional fleet organizations.

FMA is helping lead the District toward a cleaner, more efficient government fleet. Our heavy-duty fleet runs on biodiesel, and in 2025 we added more than 200 electric vehicles and forklifts, reducing emissions across a wide range of equipment.
The District of Columbia Strategic Fleet Electrification Plan, completed in September 2025, lays out a 10-year roadmap for transitioning the District's vehicle fleet to electric vehicles by 2035. The plan covers vehicle replacement, charging infrastructure, utility upgrades, costs, and the environmental and operational benefits of electrification.

"[CONFIRM: Quote from the employee about their work or what they are proud of]"
Our fleet doesn't just serve the District; it helps inspire the next generation. Throughout the year, FMA brings vehicles to schools so students can get an up-close look at the equipment that keeps their city running.
Our team is also a proud part of the District's annual Truck Touch event, where families can climb aboard street sweepers, snow plows, trash trucks, bucket trucks, and other vehicles that deliver government services every day.
The same practices that keep our fleet running efficiently can help you save on fuel and keep the District's air cleaner:
- Keep your tires properly inflated.
- Avoid unnecessary idling. It wastes fuel, and the District's anti-idling law limits it.
- Accelerate smoothly and avoid quick starts and sudden stops.
- Remove excess weight from your vehicle.
- Keep up with scheduled maintenance, especially when the seasons change.
