(Washington, DC) The DC Snow Team (Department of Public Works and the District Department of Transportation) is urging motorists to drive cautiously tonight and during tomorrow’s morning rush hour. DC crews have been spreading salt along residential and main streets since Saturday afternoon and will continue their efforts through the night.

“The overnight temperature will remain below freezing and snow continues to fall,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. “Throughout this event, we have been using treated salt, which works well under these conditions, but we need motorists to be cautious while driving.”

Residents and travelers are reminded to:

  • Take Metro as an alternative to driving.
  • Drive only if it is absolutely necessary.
  • If you must drive, use extreme caution and maintain safe speeds and distances from other vehicles.
  • Remember to keep a safe distance from emergency and snow vehicles and please use caution when attempting to pass a snowplow. Give the drivers plenty of room to safely do their jobs.
  • Clear sidewalks of snow and ice within 24 hours of the end of a snow/ice storm.
  • Help elderly or disabled neighbors remove snow from steps and sidewalks.
