Public Invited to DPW Roadeo

Thursday, April 11, 2002

The public is invited to the Department of Public Works(DPW) and (DDOT)District Division of Transportation heavy equipment “Roadeo,” an annual competition involving hundreds of DPW/DDOT employees testing their skills with various pieces of heavy road equipment.

Each event is a timed test of the operator’s skill in the use of a certain piece of equipment under unusual circumstances. Each event has required elements, some include operating the large vehicles through obstacle courses. Each required element or segment of the competition is assigned a certain number of points. Failure to complete any element or comply with any rule can result in loss of points.

“This is a great opportunity for our residents to see how snow plows, street sweepers, front end loaders, cherry pickers, refuse trucks, backhoes and other pieces of equipment are driven and operated,” said DPW Director, Leslie Hotaling. “Kids love it,“ she added.

First and Second Place winners in each event are eligible to compete in the American Public Works Association (APWA) Regional Equipment Roadeo in Ocean City, MD this May. The contest parameters comply with the rules of the APWA.
