DPW to Observe Emancipation Day, Fri. April 15

Parking regulations will be enforced along the streetcar line. DPW will NOT enforce rush hour and other parking rules. Solid waste services also will be affected.

(Washington, DC) The DC Department of Public Works will observe Emancipation Day, Friday, April 15; therefore, sanitation services and parking enforcement will be suspended that day.

Sanitation services will be suspended for the holiday and will resume Saturday, April 16.

  • In once-a-week trash and recycling collection neighborhoods, Friday’s collections will “slide” to Saturday.
  • In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday’s, Tuesday’s and Thursday’s collections will follow the regular schedule while Friday’s collections will “slide” to Saturday.
  • Street sweeping will be suspended Friday and resume Monday, April 18.

The Fort Totten Transfer Station* will be closed Friday, April 15 and reopen Saturday, April 16 to residents between 8 am and 3 pm, when DPW will conduct its Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling drop-off. The next shredding drop-off is Saturday, May 7. Additionally, DPW will conduct a monthly weekday HHW/e-cycling drop-off the Thursday before the first Saturday of each month (except holidays).  The next Thursday HHW/e-cycling drop-off is Thursday, May 5, 1 pm to 5 pm.

DPW will not enforce parking restrictions Friday, April 15, except along the streetcar line. “Blocked” Streetcar Parking Enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, e.g., Emancipation Day and Christmas Day, along H Street and Benning Road, NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue, NE. On Sundays and holidays enforcement is between 8 am and 11 pm. Enforcement on Mondays-Thursdays is 6 am to midnight; and on Fridays and Saturdays, enforcement runs between 6 am and 2 am. Normal enforcement citywide resumes Saturday, April 16.
