(Washington, DC) The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) made several announcements today about its services.
Residential Street Sweeping Ends Friday, October 31
Weekly residential mechanical street cleaning will end for the season Friday, October 31, 2014. “No Parking/Street Cleaning” restrictions will be lifted and motorists may park on posted, alternate-side, daytime sweeping routes without moving their cars on street-cleaning days. All other parking restrictions will remain in effect. Residential street sweeping will resume Monday, March 2, 2015, weather permitting.
Residential street sweeping is suspended for public safety concerns and to allow DPW employees to transition to leaf collection duties, which starts November 3. The sweepers release a fine spray of water to control dust as they sweep. When the temperature is at freezing or below, the spray can freeze and cause hazards for vehicles and pedestrians.
Overnight sweeping along the District’s major roadways, e.g., Pennsylvania, Georgia, Constitution, and Independence Avenues, will continue all winter, as weather permits. Motorists should obey the street sweeping signs posted along these and other streets where sweeping occurs.
Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling/Document Shredding at Ft. Totten
DPW will accept District residents’ household hazardous waste and e-cyclables Thursday, October 30, 1 pm-5 pm, at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station, 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE.* On Saturday, November 3, 8 am-3 pm, DPW also will accept District residents’ HHW and e-cyclables, and provide document shredding services. Document shredding is available the first Saturday of the month only.
District residents may bring HHW items such as pesticides, batteries and cleaning fluids to Ft. Totten, along with e-cycling items such as computers, televisions and other unwanted electronic equipment. 2014-2015 Leaf Collection Season Begins Monday, November 3
Leaf collection runs from November 3, 2014 through January 10, 2015. Residents should note that the same crews that collect leaves also remove snow, so leaf collection may be interrupted for snow removal duties. Leaves will be removed from neighborhood treeboxes at least twice, following the schedule that can be found at Find the Leaf Collection Schedule for Your Neighborhood on the DPW Website, www.dpw.dc.gov. DPW asks residents to place their leaves in the treebox space the Sunday before each collection cycle.
Loose leaves raked into the treeboxes will be composted. Bagged leaves placed in the treebox space or where trash and recycling are collected will not be composted.
During the last two weeks of leaf collection season (December 28-January 10), DPW will collect holiday trees and other greenery from residents whose trash is collected by DPW. Trees and greenery should be placed where the resident’s trash is collected. Please remove all ornaments and lights and do not put the tree(s) and greenery in a bag.
