DPW To Observe Veterans Day, Wed., Nov. 11

Sanitation services will be suspended; parking restrictions will be enforced along the streetcar line; leaves will be collected in designated neighborhoods.

(Washington, DC)  The DC Department of Public Works will observe Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11; therefore, sanitation services and most parking enforcement will be suspended until Thursday, November 12.

Sanitation services will be suspended for the holiday and will resume Thursday, November 12.

  • Wednesday trash and recycling collections in once-a-week collection neighborhoods will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week. 
  • In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, trash collections will follow their normal Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday schedule and recycling collections will be made following their normal schedule.
  • DC regulations allow cans to be in the public space after 6:30 pm the night before trash/recycling collection; however the cans must be removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day. Cans left in the public space outside of these times are subject sanitation enforcement.


The Ft. Totten Transfer Station* will be closed Wednesday, November 11and reopens Thursday, November 12 to residents between 1 pm and 5 pm.

Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling drop-off is weekly on Saturdays, 8 am to 3 pm.  Personal document shredding will remain the first Saturday of the month (except holidays) only.  The next shredding drop-off is Saturday, November 7. Additionally, DPW will conduct a monthly weekday HHW/e-cycling drop-off the Thursday before the first Saturday of each month (except holidays).  The next Thursday HHW/e-cycling drop-off is Thursday, November 5, 1 pm to 5 pm. HHW/ e-cycling drop off and document shredding occur at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station.

Leaf collections will be made on Veterans Day. Leaves will be removed from neighborhoods at least twice, following the schedule that can be found at Find the Leaf Collection Schedule for Your Neighborhood on the DPW Website, www.dpw.dc.gov. Residents who receive DPW trash and recycling collection services were mailed a copy of the leaf collection schedule, which also can be found at Leaf Collection Brochure.

Please note carefully when DPW will be in your neighborhood and have your leaves ready for collection by the Sunday of each of your collection weeks.

On Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, DPW will enforce streetcar parking restrictions along the H Street/Benning Road, NE corridor. “Blocked” Streetcar Parking Enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, e.g., Veterans Day, along H Street and Benning Road, NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue, NE. On Sundays and holidays enforcement is between 8 am and 11 pm. Enforcement on Mondays-Thursdays is 6 am to midnight; and on Fridays and Saturdays, enforcement runs between 6 am and 2 am. Normal enforcement of parking violations such as expired meters, residential permit parking and emergency no parking resumes Thursday, November 12.
