DPW Smart Bins Reaches 1 Million-Pound Collection Milestone
As District residents are increasingly dropping off their food waste in DPW's network of Food Waste Smart Bins, DPW has reached a major sustainability milestone, collecting 1 million pounds of compostable material.
Celebrate DC’s story through public art!
The DC250 Mural Project will bring eight new murals to iconic locations across the District, with one mural in each ward. Created by DC-based artists, each piece will reflect the history, identity and spirit of the community it represents.
Summer Collection Hours
To beat the heat, DPW collection crews will start earlier than normal! Through September, trash, recycling, and food waste collection crews will start at 5:30 AM to avoid dangerous temperatures. Residents can set their cans out beginning at 6 PM the night before their scheduled collection.
Spring Operations
DPW continues to deliver our comprehensive spring services—from street sweeping to ground maintenance—to keep our neighborhoods clean, safe, and beautiful. Please note that the Fort Totten Transfer Station is currently out of mulch.
DPW Special Waste Collection Events
The Department of Public Works (DPW) hosts Special Waste Collection Events, which are your chance to safely recycle electronics, dispose of hazardous waste, and shred documents. Residents can reserve their 15-minute spot for quick, easy drop-off! Open to DC residents only—bring proof of residency. No commercial waste allowed. Let’s keep DC clean together!

(WASHINGTON, DC) Thousands of people crowded RFK Stadium Lot 7 on Saturday, June 4, for Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Annual Summer Kickoff and Truck Touch event where there was something to intrigue children and adults. The event, which is coordinated by the Department of Public Works, featured more than 30 vehicles DC government agencies use daily to clean and repair streets, change traffic lights, collect trash and recycling, clear snow, provide emergency services, administer mobile health care, and more.

DC Agencies Aim for Zero Waste at April 30 Kingman Island Music Festival

(Washington, DC) – The 2016 Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival, an all-day festival featuring local musicians, will be the first zero waste* music festival in the District. Festivalgoers will be encouraged to use the multi-bin zero waste stations to meet the goal of diverting 80%* or better of all waste, recycling and composting.
