(WASHINGTON, DC) - The Department of Public Works announced today that it is taking its popular environmental services – Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling/Personal Document Shredding – to St. Elizabeths East Gateway Pavilion Saturday, May 20, 8 am to 3 pm, to familiarize Wards 7 and 8 residents with these free means to safely dispose of these items. Residents may bring toxic materials, unwanted electronics and their personal documents for shredding to the Pavilion at 2730 Martin Luther King, Jr., SE (located at the third Gate off of MLK Jr.,Ave) Saturday, May 20, between 8 am and 3 pm. DPW is addressing the District’s population explosion that has attracted new residents to Ward 7 and 8 communities by bringing these services to their neighborhood.

District residents may bring HHW items such as cooking oil, pesticides, pet flea control and cleaning fluids to St. Elizabeths, along with e-cycling items such as computers, televisions and other unwanted electronic equipment. DPW does not accept latex paint, which can be disposed of in the trash. Paint must be dried out by adding an absorbent, such as kitty litter or sawdust, to it before it goes in the trash.

DPW employees will be on site to answer questions about its sanitation services, including the Wards 7 and 8 DC Clean Alleys initiative, trash and recycling collections, bulk trash collections, and sanitation education and enforcement.
