DC Government Agencies Flash Mob to “Scare Up” Support for Local Charities

Friday, October 30, 2015

“Life can be Scary without Help,” proclaimed the DC Department of Public Works (DPW), DC Fire & Emergency Medical Services, the Department of Corrections, and Department of General Services as they kicked off their DC One Fund Campaign today. To emphasize this theme, members of each participated in a Thriller Dance flash mob in front of the Reeves Center at 2000 14th Street, NW. The performance included a dramatic entrance by uniformed members of the Metropolitan Police Department, who also demonstrated their Thriller dance moves.

“By providing assistance to families in need, guidance to youth, care for our elderly and more, local charities help support District government agencies efforts,” said DPW Director Chris Shorter. “This flash mob was fun for a worthy cause. Life truly can be scary for those who cannot get the help they need and our employees came out today and showed their commitment to those families.”

The DC One Fund program is the District Government’s workplace giving program and encourages employees to donate at least one percent of their earnings to the charity of their choice. It is jointly administered by the United Way of the National Capital Area and The United Black Fund Inc. of Greater Washington, DC.

The flash mob was sponsored by City First Bank of DC, who provided support for professional dancer, choreographer and flash mobber Megan Piluk, cofounder of Out of the Blue Dance Productions. Piluk choreographed and organized a flash dance mob at the University of Maryland vs Duke game that went viral on YouTube and received more than 8 million hits.

The One Fund Thriller flash mob is considered the first official DC government flash mob performance. You can view a copy of the raw footage on DPW’s Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/dpwdc/?ref=hl
