The DC Snow Team (Department of Public Works and Department of Transportation) is asking residents to reach out to their neighbors to organize snow shoveling teams to clear sidewalks after it snows. The District requires property owners (residential and commercial) to clear the sidewalks surrounding their property within 24 hours after a snowfall.

“We have had a couple of light snowfalls, and forecasters are talking about the possibility of some snow around Christmas,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. “So far we have been lucky and escaped the extreme accumulations hitting the mid-West. Anyone who endured last winter here knows that having help shoveling snow makes the job a lot easier than doing it alone.”

“Many of our residents are elderly or disabled and need their neighbors’ help,” said DDOT Director Gabe Klein. “That’s why we are asking you to volunteer your services and make winter a little easier on everyone. Let’s hope the forecasters are right about the long-range predictions of normal snowfall this year of about 12-15 inches.”
