DPW Observes America Recycles Day at Ft. Totten with Gifts, Tips

Monday, November 16, 2009
The first 20 residents to drop off items will receive gift bags.

Got unwanted household hazardous waste (HHW), old electronics (e-waste) or personal documents to shred? Take them to the Ft. Totten Transfer Station, 4900 John F. McCormack Rd., NE, Saturday, November 14, from 8 am to 3 pm. The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) will give special gift bags to the first 20 DC residents to drop off items at all three stations—HHW, e-waste and shredding—in celebration of America Recycles Day. DPW's environmental education specialist will be on site to answer recycling questions and give green tips until noon.

"Ft Totten is open every Saturday for residents to drop off toxic household products, old computers and monitors, and to shred personal documents," said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. "But this Saturday is our way of acknowledging those residents who regularly recycle and, by doing so, help us keep harmful pollutants out of our environment."

America Recycles Day, observed nationally on November 15, is dedicated to encourage Americans to:

  • Reduce the amount of waste they produce by rethinking purchases.
  • Buy recycled products.
  • Reuse items whenever possible.
  • Recycle all products that can be recycled.

Residents are reminded to review the complete list of items that can be recycled in the District by either referring to their DPW September 2008 Reference Guide or by visiting DPW’s recycling website at www.recycle.dpw.dc.gov.  Residents whose recyclables exceed their container(s) can put additional recyclables in either a brown paper bag or a small cardboard box and place them next to their recycling bin or cart.  For an additional cart or bin, residents may call 311.
