DPW Observes Labor Day, Monday, September 6

Monday, August 30, 2010
Trash/Recycling Collection Suspended on Holiday, Collected Early on Days Above 90°

The DC Department of Public Works announced today how services will be affected in observance of Labor Day on Monday, September 6, 2010.

Trash Collection: There will be no trash and recycling collections. Trash and recycling collections will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week. For example, Monday’s trash and recycling collections will be made on Tuesday and Tuesday’s collections will be made on Wednesday. In neighborhoods with twice-weekly trash collections, Monday and Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and Friday. Collections normally made on Tuesday and Friday, will be made Wednesday and Saturday. Trash and recycling containers should be placed out for collection no earlier than 6:30 pm the night before collection and removed from public space by 8 pm on the day(s) of collection.

NOTE: Due to projected poor air quality and temperatures in the 90s, trash and recycling collection will begin at 6 am each day this week (August 30 – September 3, 2010).

Parking Enforcement: The agency will suspend enforcement of parking meters, residential parking, and rush hour lane restrictions. It also will suspend towing of abandoned vehicles.

Household Hazardous/Electronic Waste Collection & Shredding: Ft. Totten transfer station will be open Saturday, September 4 for normal Saturday operations from 8 am to 3 pm but will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday. Ft. Totten will reopen Tuesday at 1 pm for residents to bring their trash and bulk items only. HHW/E-waste and shredding services are NOT available during the week.

Other services suspended for Labor Day include scheduled street and alley cleaning and nuisance abatement. All services will resume Tuesday, September 7, 2010.
