DPW Observes Memorial Day, Monday, May 25

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today how services will be affected in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, 2009.
Trash Collection: There will be no trash and recycling collections. Trash and recycling collections will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week.  For example, Monday’s trash and recycling collections will be made on Tuesday and Tuesday’s collections will be made on Wednesday. In neighborhoods with twice-weekly trash collections, Monday and Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and Friday. Collections normally made on Tuesday and Friday, will be made Wednesday and Saturday.  Trash and recycling containers should be placed out for collection no earlier than 6:30 pm the night before collection and removed from public space by 8 pm on the day(s) of collection.
Parking Enforcement: The agency will suspend enforcement of parking meters, residential parking, and rush hour lane restrictions. It also will suspend towing of abandoned vehicles.

Ft. Totten:  Ft. Totten Trash Transfer Station will be closed Monday to residential customers.  It will reopen Tuesday for residents to bring their trash and bulk items. Compost also is available to residents at Ft. Totten on Saturdays only from 8 am to 3 pm. Both the Ft. Totten (4809 John F. McCormack Road, NE) and the Benning Road (3200 Benning Road, NE) trash transfer stations will be open on Saturday from 8 am to 3 pm to receive residents’ unwanted toxic items, such as pesticides, batteries and motor oil.  Electronics, including televisions, computers and cell phones, also will be accepted.  Residents also may bring up to five boxes of personal paper documents and credit cards to be shredded for free.  For a complete list of items, please go to www.dpw.dc.gov and click on Household Hazardous Waste / E-Cycling / Shredding.

Other services suspended for Memorial Day include scheduled street and alley cleaning and nuisance abatement. All services will resume Tuesday, May 26, 2009.
