DPW Soliciting Public Comment On Draft Solid Waste Plan

Thursday, March 20, 2003
Residents' Comments May Be Submitted Online Until May 2

(Washington, DC) The Department of Public Works is soliciting public review of its two-year Solid Waste Plan. For the next five weeks, the draft plan will be posted on the DPW Web site in PDF format. An introduction, as well as instructions for submitting comments, are found in a preface to the plan. Comments will be accepted via email or US mail at the address shown on the introduction page.

"This is the business plan for our Solid Waste operations,” said DPW Director Leslie Hotaling. “It must address not only doing things right, but also doing the right things. And to check that we are on the right course, we need the input from our customers and stakeholders."

The draft plan begins with an evaluation of DPW's Solid Waste Management Administration (SWMA). This is the first stage of planning and helps the department's leadership focus on key Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, commonly called SWOT.

Second, the plan establishes a roadmap for stakeholders, customers, and the organization itself, by presenting specific action items that will help shape SWMA's FY 2004 and FY 2005 budgets. Finally, the participatory process of developing this comprehensive plan ensures that all responsible parties and stakeholders understand program goals and their respective roles in achieving them.
