Mayor Bowser Encourages Residents to #GoZeroWaste by Dropping Off Food Waste at Locations in All Eight Wards

Friday, August 9, 2019

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser encouraged District residents to participate in a Food Waste Drop-Off Program to help meet the District’s zero waste goal of diverting 80 percent of waste from landfills and waste-to-energy facilities. Nine Farmers’ Markets are designated across the city for residents to drop off their food waste for free.

"The Food Waste Drop-Off Program supports our efforts to become the healthiest, greenest, and most livable city in the nation,” said Mayor Bowser. “Disposing of food waste in responsibly is one small way we can all help protect the environment and build a more sustainable city.”

Mayor Bowser introduced the Food Waste Drop-Off Program in 2017, as part of her comprehensive Zero Waste D.C. 2.0 Plan to make the District the most sustainable city in the country. The weekly collection program has already collected more than 700,000 pounds of fruit and vegetable scraps from more than 1,700 household participants.
