(WASHINGTON, DC) – The Department of Public Works (DPW) and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH) announce they are closing out the 15-year anniversary of the MuralsDC program with 15 unique art installations across four wards, to include an alley gallery (a.k.a., “Art Allery”) in the Atlas neighborhood of Ward 6 that will feature the program’s first interactive, three-dimensional artwork.

The celebration has already begun with the unveiling of the first completed mural—a young, native Washingtonian enjoying the Atlas District experience— in the parking lot of the Chik-fil-A at 1417 Maryland, Avenue NE in Ward 5. The upcoming Art Allery collection will feature a host of new murals along the wall of 1335 H Street, NE, between the H Street Country Club and the Atlas Theatre. It will be directly across from eight pre-existing murals on the wall of 1331 H Street, NE. The Art Allery will be featured in the Atlas District’s “Art All Night” celebration on September 24.

“We are excited to celebrate this special anniversary by creating the District’s longest ‘Art Allery’ in the heart of the Atlas District,” said Interim DPW Director Mike Carter. “I’m also proud to see MuralsDC still going strong after a decade and a half. The programs continued success would not have been possible without all of the artists, property owners and CAH.”

The 2022 season will wrap with a Hop-On Hop-Off tour of the new murals on a Big Bus DC double decker sometime in September. A similar tour was held at the start of the MuralsDC season in May, where artists rode along with tour participants and discussed the inspiration and artistic techniques behind their work.

MuralsDC has been funded by DPW since 2007 as a complement to the agency’s graffiti abatement efforts. The agency works in cooperation with CAH, which matched the program’s $100,000 budget for its 10-year anniversary and again collaborated on funding for its 15th anniversary. By the end of the 2022 program, MuralsDC will have more than 175 mural installations across every ward of the city.

MuralsDC made national headlines in June 2020, when under Mayor Bowser’s leadership, it coordinated the development of the Black Lives Matter street mural that subsequently became the anchor of what was renamed “Black Lives Matter Plaza.”
