Unique DC Summer Internship Immerses Students in Environmental Management Issues

Wednesday, September 1, 2010

The Washington Convention and Sports Authority (WCSA), Department of Public Works (DPW) and Howard University have teamed up to give six Howard student interns in-depth exposure to practical experience in sustainability issues with the Material Resources Management Internship.

This intensive program which ran from June 28th to August 17th exposed the interns to recycling/sustainability issues and experiences, including their own waste sort project at Howard, teaming up with Microsoft officials in town for their conference at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and exploring the practical concerns Shaw area businesses face.

“Our ongoing commitment to sustainability embraces programs that work in tandem with partners like DPW and Howard University to provide valuable knowledge, integrate environmental respect and responsibility, and strengthen our communities,” said Angelique Cofield, director of quality assurance at the Washington Convention and Sports Authority

Additionally, the interns took part in community outreach by going door-to-door in the LeDroit Park neighborhood, inviting residents to ask questions about environmental issues and sharing information about the District’s recycling program. They also met with an extraordinary range of experts from organizations such as Keep America Beautiful, Institute for Local Self-Reliance, and DPW Solid Waste Management Administration.

“It was such an honor to share the success of the Material Resources Management Internship summer training,” said Russell Klein, community environmental education specialist for the Department of Public Works. “By way of the many contributing partners, the astounding support of local institutions and the daily spirit and commitment of our trainees, we are fabricating a framework by which to cascade knowledge, develop community change, and advance environmental progress within a new generation.”
