Upcoming Snow Storm Interrupts Certain DPW Services

Friday, December 18, 2009
DPW crews need all available equipment for upcoming snow event.

(Washington, DC) The DC Department of Public Works announced today that leaf collection and Saturday’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)/E-cycling/Document Shredding services are being suspended due to the predicted snow storm.

Leaf collection employees and equipment form the backbone of DPW’s snow fighting team; so when snow is predicted, leaf collection trucks are taken out of service to have plows and salt spreaders mounted on them.

“We will need all the snow equipment we have available to prepare for this significant snow event,” said DPW Director William O. Howland Jr. “As a result, we will halt our leaf collection duties until our streets are clear following the storm.” Howland added that leaf collections will resume after the streets are restored from the snow event, and he asked residents to continue to check the DPW Web site and the media to learn when DPW will return to leaf collection.

The Ft. Totten Transfer Station will be closed to the public for Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling/Document Shredding Saturday, December 19, because of the snow storm, and Saturday, December 26, because a large volume of trash collection vehicles will be using the facility that day. The next HHW/e-cycling/shredding opportunity will be Saturday, January 2.
