(WASHINGTON, DC) Department of Public Works Director Christopher J. Shorter will present Certificates of Commendation, Saturday, April 23 to neighborhood groups for stewardship of their neighborhoods. Director Shorter will visit communities that are participating in this week’s Helping Hand program following the schedule below. Throughout April, “Earth Month,” DPW will recognize communities’ contributions to the District’s overall attractiveness.

Ward 7 – Pope Branch Park Restoration Alliance, Director Shorter’s presentation is at 9:15 am at the corner of Fairlawn Avenue & M Place, SE. The clean-up event runs from 9 am through noon.
Ward 1 – Meridian Hill Neighborhood Association, Director Shorter’s presentation is at 10: 15 am at Harrison Recreation Center is located at 1330 V Street, NW. The clean-up event runs from 9 am through noon.
Through the Helping Hand program, DPW helps community groups that organize Saturday neighborhood clean-up projects. The program lends tool kits with five rakes and brooms, two shovels, and 20 trash bags. A $20 refundable deposit is required for all tool kits. Free compost also can be delivered for use in neighborhood beautification projects. DPW will send trucks to collect the bagged trash and a SWEEP (Solid Waste Education and Enforcement Program) inspector will collect the tool kit. Please call the Mayor’s Citywide Call Center at 311 for an application for a Helping Hand tool kit for a neighborhood clean-up project. Residents also may pick up free compost between March and October from the Ft. Totten Transfer Station, 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, Saturdays only from 8 am to 3 pm.
