Acceptable/Prohibited Special Waste Items at RFK Stadium

After March 16, the events will no longer be held at RFK. They’ll be moving to twice quarterly – one Thursday per quarter at Anacostia Skate Park (1500 Anacostia Drive SE) and one Saturday per quarter at Carter Baron Tennis Center (1698 Kennedy St NW). We have the dates and times for the first 4 events (below).

Acceptable/Prohibited Household Hazardous Waste Items at RFK Stadium

We Will Accept:

  • Aerosol
  • Ant poisons
  • Antifreeze
  • Asbestos
  • Auto fluids – brake, transmission
  • Bleach
  • Compressed fluorescent lamps
  • Cooking Oil
  • Drain decloggers
  • Ethanol
  • Fire extinguishers (household sizes)
  • Flammable adhesives
  • Flammable waxes and abrasives
  • Fluorescent lights, u-shape and circular
  • Fluorescent tubes 4 feet or less
  • Household batteries – tape terminals of lithium-based and batteries greater than 9 volts
  • Household cleaning products
  • Insecticides
  • Lawn or garden products
  • LED lights
  • Lights of all types
  • Mercury
  • Mercury thermometers
  • Motor oil
  • Oxygen tanks (empty or full)
  • Paints, latex (Latex paint can be recycled through the PaintCare program. Check PaintCare for the closest drop-off location and one-day event)
  • Paints, oil-based
  • Pet flea control
  • Photographic chemicals
  • Pool and spa chemicals
  • Propane tanks, no larger than 20 lbs.
  • Rodent poisons
  • Stains, lacquers, varnishes

We Will NOT Accept:

  • Air conditioners (Accepted at Ft Totten Transfer Station or call 311 for a bulk trash collection appointment.)
  • Ammunition (Take to the closest police station.)
  • Business or commercial hazardous material.
  • Explosives (Take to the closest police station.)
  • License plates, expired. (After cancelling them, mail old tags to DC DMV to be shredded and disposed at: DC DMV, Vehicle Registration, PO Box 90120, Washington, DC 20090. Retain your tag cencellation receipt in case there is a need to adjudicate a ticket erroneously issued to your cancelled tag.)
  • Medicine (Do NOT pour medications down the sink or flush down the toilet.) Please see the What Goes Where? tool on the District's Zero Waste web site. Enter “medications” in the search box for a list of local pharmacies that have medication drop-off boxes. If you cannot make it to a drop-off location or event, mix crushed pills or liquid with dirt, cat litter, or used coffee grounds, then put in the trash. Recycle empty pill bottle after removing personal information and label from the bottle.
  • Microwave ovens (Accepted at Ft Totten Transfer Station and through 311 for bulk trash collection appointment.)
  • Needles & Sharps (syringes used for diabetic injections) The improper disposal of contaminated sharps is a serious safety concern for garbage collectors and landfill workers. Please review the step-by-step guidance sheet for safe disposal from the Department of Energy and the Environment.
  • Tires (Up to four tires may be taken to the Fort Totten Transfer Station during regular business hours, Wednesday through Friday from 10 am to 2 pm.)

We Will NOT Accept:

  • Small household appliances (microwave ovens, blenders, toasters) – Accepted at the Ft Totten Transfer Station and through 311 for bulk trash collection.
  • Large household appliances (air conditioners, refrigerators, washers/dryers) – Accepted at the Ft Totten Transfer Station and through 311 for bulk trash collection.

Document Shredding at RFK Lot 3

We Will Accept:

  • Up to 5 boxes (approximately 20"x14"x14") of personal documents 
    • Documents with staples, rubber bands, paper clips, even black “alligator clips” are acceptable.
  • Credit cards (no more than 10 credit cards per vehicle) 

We Will NOT Accept:

  • Business or commercial material for shredding.  
  • More than 5 boxes of documents per visit per resident.
